WPL SSFA v FNSW Institute (Sunday 12th May)

Reserve Grade. SSFA 1 v Institute 7
It was a cold, windy Mother’s Day today and unfortunately our girls couldn’t bring a happy end to a dreary day. But try they did. Before we knew it we were down 3-0. The Institute team were a highly skilled team and great to watch and this is what happened to our girls in the first half on the field; we were on the back foot and watching. At half time we were 5-0. Our team talk at half time was: the game is not over, we need to adapt and solve the problems on the field by talking and instructing each other. The girls, Mark and Geoff agreed the team needed to squeeze the Institute out to the sides and not over complicate the game.
During the second half we were in the right head space, and attack, defend and squeeze the Institute we did. This determination saw Rosch make a winning tackle, then a pass off to Emma G, who passed to Lauren in the back line, who then crossed a long ball to a sprinting Kate down the sideline who passed off to Beth who took on the goalie and smashed it home. The second half saw the Institute score only 2 goals to our one, the shell shock had worn off from the first half and we were now playing better soccer. Great game by Emma Gidney in goals, who was battered continuously in the first half – she will need a radox tonight! Many awe inspiring saves were made. Thanks to Ollie our new friend and sideline helper from Queensland who kept us company on the bench. All the best in your National rock climbing competition. The team rap up was – the person with the ball needs options and in tough games the whole team has to help. Our attitude after a poor first half, didn’t drop – we entered the second half with heads high and a “we haven’t lost” attitude. Good on you girls. Not the present Us Mums were hoping for but we (and the Dads) are proud of you. 😊

WPL 17. We came onto the field ready for the challenge ahead. We knew it would be difficult but the opportunity was there. The whistle blew and Sutho was straight in the tackles. Shifting as a unit we attempted to stop any possible attacking opportunities. Working hard together to gain possession the girls did just that creating some forward runs forcing institute to transition fast. With creative forward runs and strong defending in transitions we left the pitch at half time with an empty score line. The win was still in reach.
Coming out into the second half with the urge to get on the score board Sutho started fast and strong keeping possession and attacking in their half of the field with a few offside calls denying us goals. Institute snagged the opportunity in transition with a well constructed goal with quick passes.
We were determined to put up a fight so Sutho got straight back into it challenging for the ball. Within a few minutes Izzy snagged the ball putting it through to Leanna. With a great dummy by Chris and an even better run by Leanna she was out past the defense with a 1v1 with the keeper! With ease, Leanna slotted the ball in the corner of the goal, evening up the score board 1-1. In less then a minute we had another attacking opportunity, a near miss warning Institute that Sutho is here for the win. Unfortunately Institute took hold of their attack and found the corner of the goal putting them in front with a 2-1 lead. With some great saves from keeper Bella and the team defending we denied them many goal scoring opportunities. Unortunely in the last 5 minutes Institute managed to take hold of 2 more attacks finishing their shots, taking the win with a 4-1 lead. Sutho put up a fight until the end and unfortunetly did not get the 3 points on the ladder. Good game girls and thanks to Alex and Paris for helping us out. Written by Isabella Georgievski.

U14s SSFA 1 vs FNSW Institute 2
Today we woke up and headed out to Valentines Sports Park to play against NSW Institute. We had a solid warm up and were ready to play. The first half of the match was pretty good. We had good passes and balls to the forwards and after a few attempts Tilly ended up scoring an excellent goal. Unfortunately after a few rough decisions Institute managed to score of a free kick, making it 1-1 at half time.

We started the second half well and held institute out from scoring for a while but In the last 15 minutes they scored a goal making it 2-1. We held our heads up and kept on going but unfortunately we just couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net.
Even though we didn’t win I believe we played very well and had one of pure best games of the season. Great job to all the girls

W17. Win 2 – 1.
We entered the game hungry to win after many unlucky games and after the starting whistle we did well in creating chances. We defended as a team and continually tested Newcastle’s defenders with great through balls to our forwards that we were unable to finish. It was an evenly contested first half with both sides putting in their all. Our defence was doing well and there were some good saves by Bella that kept Newcastle without a point. After putting on a good fight Sutherland were unlucky to concede a goal that skimmed the crossbar. Sutherland then picked up and continued to make opportunities for the forwards resulting in a great goal from Julia. This left the half time score as 1-1.
The second half was just as close with both teams putting their all in and providing loads of chances in their final thirds. With 15 minutes to go Angelina made a great run through the middle making it 2-1. For the remainder of the game Newcastle fought hard to score but Sutherland worked as a team and continued to keep them out. More opportunities were made by both sides but the score remained 2-1 Sutherlands way by the final whistle. A fantastic game from all the girls and an even better result with many more wins to come! Also a big thank you to Ashlee and EJ for playing up and helping us out. – Lana Giampaoli

WPL14. SSFA 0 – Emerging Jets 1
Today we woke up early and played our last game of round 1 against emerging jets. We had a great warm up and were ready to play. The first half, they had a lot of shots but were saved by Brodie who did sensational saves, to keep it 0-0 . Millie had an amazing game with outstanding tackles and an amazing slide to save a goal. We had some shots but didn’t end up in a goal. We produced some amazing through balls and amazing pass strings making us been able to hit the counter quick. The second half was intense as both sides had so many opportunities. Tara did amazing at screening, stopping balls going through the holes. Towards the end they had scored a goal making it 1-0 with 5 to go. Overall we had an amazing game. Keep it up suthoo!!! Bella

WPL 15. SSFA 0 v Emerging Jets 6
As Georgia, Paris, Hoffie, Alex, Mia, Kyra, Akala, Dan, Britt and Morgan safely arrived in Japan, the remaining 5 of us (EJ, Ashley, Sarah, Chloe and myself) woke up Sunday morning pumped up for our game with a massive help from the U14’s, who were willing to play with us to represent U15 SSFA. With more than half of our players gone, the pounding speaker in the change rooms and during the warm up just wasn’t the same. Regardless we tried out best to stay focused and put our heads in the game.
EJ stepped up to lead the team as Captain and Ashley kicked off. Newcastle we’re playing through us with their technical foot work and great passes. We would fight to make the ball ours but not hard enough as they would shortly win it back. In the first half the ball was mainly up our end of the field making us defending majority of the time, but we occasionally made some brilliant win backs, runs down the side lines and cut backs (just as we’ve been practicing). We kept the ball from dropping into the back of the net with just enough strength on the ball and some very close goals brilliantly saved by Brodie. That was until 20 minutes into the first half unfortunately we conceded the first goal of the match. That didn’t drop our heads but Newcastle managed to score another 3 goals in that half due to late runs back into the box and loss of communication.
Half time whistle blew and we talked with John listing what we were doing wrong, how to fix it and the positives in the next half to come. As we were set for the whistle we had cleared our heads from the previous scored goals and started the new half fresh.
In the second half we tried to include more things we’ve been doing at training. We had the right ideas and decisions but they wouldn’t work out due to limited communication, not being positioned properly and not many check in’s. Although we let another 2 goals in and did not score any that half we improved our play, worked together as team and had lots of fun!!
A massive thank you to all the 14’s who played with us. Couldn’t have done it with out you (literally). And good luck to all the girls in Japan, thinking of you’s! -Teagan

It is with sadness that the SSFA has been informed of the passing of John Cole last Sunday morning.

John was a long time member of our association through his commitment to Como Jannali FC (of which he was also a Life Member).

John also held a variety of positions at the SSFA including Vice President, Registrar, member of the Judiciary Committee and the Appeals Committee, Club delegate to the Association and he was a recipient of the prestigious SSFA Merit Award.

Our wishes are extended to his family during this difficult time.

He will be sadly missed.

Sincerely,

Matt Brady

WPL SSFA v Northbridge (Sunday 27th May)

Reserve Grade . SSFA 0 v Mariners 3
The focus was the “No Go Zone” and the 6 second press before moving into our defensive position. Our girls did this today, with Kara making great sideline runs and passes to Kate who crossed to either Beth or Gen, it was unlucky that the ball could not find the back of the net. A run away ball saw Northbridge’s first goal, and not long after the second goal to Northbridge after Sutherland withheld 5 corners in a row. Another great game by Emma our goalie. In the second half we tried to tap over Northbridge heads to our running strikers, but it just wasn’t our day to settle the goal score. A late play by Northbridge sealed the game to 3-0. The score was not indicative of how the girls played today. Each one could be individually mentioned for their part – a few highlights being great hassles from Kate, pressing from Lauren and consistency up the back with Maddie, Kellie, Kara and Zoe. Welcome to Rory our new member of the team.

WPL17. Round 12 saw us up against North Shore Mariners FC. It was our second encounter against this side where we previously drew with them 1-1. After being on a high from last week’s victory, the girls were eager to play quality football and get a result. We went down 2-0 in the first half after conceding off two set pieces with a corner that appeared to go out and a free kick just outside the box. Although we were down 2-0 we kept fighting and were still working hard to not let the game go. All our hard work was rewarded when Kiara scored a goal from the edge of the box just dipping under the crossbar. (Half Time Score: 2-1)
After the halftime break, we came into the second half hyped and ready to fight for another 35 minutes. We were unlucky with our attack, hitting shots at the keeper, over the bar and just wide. North Shore Mariners FC made the scoreline 3-1 after we lost the ball at the edge of their box and they counter-attacked. After conceding the third goal, most of the girl’s heads and spirits dropped resulting in slopping play which lead to their fourth goal.
An excellent effort from all the girls today, as they all fought from the kick off to full time. We played well as individuals but even better as a team and we will soon be rewarded for all our efforts.
(Full-Time Score: 4-1) Angelina Mastoris

WPL14 – SSFA 0 vs NORTH SHORE MARINERS 2
We started the morning off with a nice sleep in, then made our way out to Northbridge Oval. There, we had a really good warm up and kicked off with a positive attitude. Being the second time we came up against the North Shore Mariners, we were confident in our game plan and were ready to get back onto our winning streak. First half we worked hard but couldn’t get the ball past their back line and unfortunately let in 2 goals. After a good pep talk by Geoff and Georgia we came back onto the field fired up. We kept possession which resulted in more shots on goal, but unfortunately we couldn’t get them in the back of the net. Overall, it was a shame we didn’t score in the second half as we really tried hard and played our game. But heads up for next week against Manly!! Go Sutho! 💙 – Abbey

SSFA WPL15s competing in Japan

$

A group of our SSFA U15 girls recently returned from Japan where they represented Australia in the One Nation Cup, an International Youth Football tournament from May 19-27.

The squad was formed in conjunction with Manly United and W-League club Sydney FC with eight girls from each club accompanying staff from Sydney FC and SSFA to Shonan, Japan located about one hour outside of Yokohama.

The One Nation Cup originates from Bremen, Germany and is held every two years with countries from Japan, South Africa, Germany, China, Turkey, Russia, New Zealand and China participating in matches, cultural exchanges and school visits.

The tournament is primarily based on bringing young people from around the world together to generate understanding, experience each others culture and make friends with football as the vehicle to do so.

SSFA coaches Brittany Christie and Morgan Maxwell accompanied the girls. Brittany stated that “The One Nation Cup was an amazing opportunity for coaches and players alike. We have learned much from our experiences and adventures both on and off the pitch with our Sydney FC mentors Mizuki Ito and Pat McCann. Thank you to everyone involved and we couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to take with us.”

While experiencing mixed results the team improved across the course of the tournament as the players and coaches combined more effectively both on and off the pitch. While eventually succumbing to narrow but hard fought losses against some very talented teams the girls proved very popular amongst the participating teams and the local partner schools who provided enthusiastic and noisy support for each match.

SSFA coach Maxwell Morgan commented. “It was an experience of a lifetime being able to coach the sport I love in a foreign country. We couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to take away and it was also a great learning experience, watching and listening to coaches from different countries.”

The team also participated in a variety of cultural visits and school exchanges including a visit to the Big Bhudda in Kamakura and a Zen meditation experience at the Kenchoji temple. Multiple school visits were also conducted with the players having opportunities to meet and share experiences with students from the Nakajima Junior and Seisa High schools.

The 2020 tournament is scheduled to be held in Bremen, Germany.

WPL15 SSFA 0 v Manly United 1
We started the game willing to take on Manly. We were pumped to play with an amazing result from Wednesday night.
We were ready to take on the skill and pressure that was going to happen throughout the game. With a positive talk in the change rooms we knew what had to be down as a team. With passes being played all over the field and through balls bombing the wings, are backs were ready to put pressure on their players.
With the ball up Manly’s end, with shots coming from the wings and strikers Akalas amazing saves stopped the ball going into the back of the net. Not long after Manly were pressing very high on our centre backs it was up to the mid field to receive and show as an option. With their players up their back it was hard for Akala to have option’s. With pressure coming from behind Manly had the chance to slot the ball into the back of the net.
We all knew that we couldn’t drop our heads we remained physical and hungry for the ball but was not lucky enough to place the ball in the net. With Ash, Mia, Paris and Abbey making amazing runs towards goal, with Manly fighting back and wanting to clear it out from their half. With strong defence Georgia, Alex, Dan, Lucy and Chloe they were all able the stop the balls that were being played through. With Tara, Sarah and Kyra holding the middle to stop any shots on goal, we were able to keep the score at 0 – 1 to Manly.
Overall, We all played amazing and all put in 100%. We kept fighting for a goal but with Manly willing to take a win home they kept the pressure on each and everyone of us. We all played so well and did everything we were asked.
Thanks again to the 14’s Abbey, Lucy and Tara for playing up, you all played amazing!! EJ Winston

AYL SSFA v Football South Coast (Sunday 10 June)

AYL U13. SSFA 2 V FOOTBALL SOUTH COAST 0
This was one of our ‘gutsiest’ performances to date against a quality opposition. There is no sure-win in the U13s competition and today was no exception.
Just two minutes into the match, Dylan made a break up the left side and crossed the ball perfectly to the 6-yard mark. Luke C was shaping to shoot when a FSC defender caught a foot to the ball and scored an own goal.
At half time the Coaches spoke about knocking the ball early and the importance of communication. The boys needed to continue working hard and stay confident.
7 minutes into the second half, Luke G switched the play from left back across to Ben on the right wing. Harry, waiting in the middle screamed for the ball and Ben was able to cross to him. Harry seized the opportunity and scored!
Because of sickness and injuries, our normally robust bench was down to Jordan, who was coming back from injury and Max, one of our Goal Keepers. With just over 10 minutes to go and leading 2-0, Harry and Ben were granted a well-deserved early mark and Jordan and Max were given a run.
The coaches were so impressed with the boys today. They gave 110% against a very physical and tenacious opposition and they reminded the boys to savour that winning feeling.
We are now sitting 2nd on the ladder after 14 rounds with the best defensive record in the competition. The boys are training well and chasing first place.
Well done boys – we are all enjoying watching good football! (Cath Beardsley)

WPL SSFA v MacArthur (Sunday 17 June)

WPL14 – SSFA 1 vs Marcarthur 0
Yesterday we had a sleep in and headed over to Macarthur to verse the Macarthur Rams. We knew it was a game we could win and warmed up with intensity.
When we started the game we pressed high and and that resulted in Millie winning the ball and scoring a lovely goal. We were 1:0 up but we new we weren’t playing the best we could have.
In the second half we improved a little bit towards the last 20 minutes but we still struggled to keep the ball under control. In the last 5 minutes we played a very high intensity game which led us to keeping the win. It was a great feeling to win and we all put in our best efforts – well done girls. Jaime

WPL 15 SSFA 1 Rams 2
Going into the game we felt confident and excited for the whistle to blow. After the team talk we knew what we had to do to win the game.
The game started in windy conditions and we managed to keep MacArthur out of our half by using the new press, “holly”, as well as having good possession with great 1, 2’s and switches of the ball. MacArthur began to show signs of their physical play with strong defending using their bodies to effect. In particular a number of their players were going in harder than expected.
Despite the many unfair tackles we still managed to keep most of the possession.
Coming into the middle of the first half, we were lucky enough for Mia to place a very well earned ball into the back of the net. The goal was produced by a mid fielder slotting the ball in the middle of 2 defenders and with extraordinary pace Mia was able to get there and make the score 1-0.
With half time approaching MacArthur had stepped up their game and managed to score a goal. A Rams girl struck the ball with a right foot, swinging the ball outwards which not even Akala’s outstretched arm could reach. Half time score 1-1
During the break Morgan and Britt game is an encouraging team talk, praising our high press tactics and saying not to be intimidated by their hard hitting tackles.
The second half started strong with much positive communication on the field. Sitting on the sideline I felt the team had lifted and knew what needed to be done. Like the first half we were making breaks down both sides but not quite getting converted in to shots. An unfortunate goal saw us with a 1 goal deficit, this did not mean we were out of the game.
We all tried our hardest to create opportunities that would result in an equal scoreline.
A brave save by Akala led to a re- occurrence of her knee injury which saw Paris step up in goals. With the help of the team Paris was not put under too much pressure. With the sun setting and the temperature dropping so did our chance to equalise. Overall the game was very even, our girls were brave in defeat against a very physical team.
Special mention to Jade, Tilly, Lucy and Nicole from the 14’s for helping us out and doing an amazing job!

AYL 13. SSFA (3) V GLADESVILLE HORNSBY FA (0) (Saturday 16 June)

It was fantastic to see our full squad return, ready to take on Gladesville Hornsby FA. The boys had prepared well throughout the week and were keen to continue their winning streak.
Gladesville played a defensive game for the first half and unfortunately, we failed to capitalise on a few scoring opportunities. The boys kept their concentration and held their shape. They continued to work hard, making sure they got to the ball first. Patience won over and in the 37th minute, Dylan scored. Will scored another two goals just a few minutes later securing a convincing win to Sutherland.
The work rate of the boys should be commended with yet another ‘clean sheet’ to add to the stats. They are playing so well as a team, supporting each other, and communicating.
Next week we take on the very physical MacArthur FA and we are all looking forward to a tough battle. Well done boys, keep up the good work.

The Weekend Impact of Wet Weather

Will we be playing football this weekend?
Matches are expected to progress as drawn this (and every scheduled) weekend unless otherwise advised by your Club (with last minute changes also posted on the SSFA’s website – www.shirefootball.com.au). Check the draw on the SSFA website for any amendments to-date.

How and When is it decided if we will play?
The Association does not call the fields in or out! This practice ceased almost 10 years ago. Each club is now required to inspect their fields and contact the designated Association wet weather person by 6:30am on doubtful weekend days – the Club is responsible to make the ‘call’. If insufficient fields are deemed playable by the Clubs – that is there is not enough spare capacity to move games on that day after fields are called out – the days play will be ‘called off’ by the SSFA and Plan B implemented.

A decision is made day-by day on the weekend and is wholly and solely based upon safety of players – not the need to protect fields, not with a preference given to any age group or competition, or any other reason. Decisions are made as soon as practically possible after every avenue is investigated to have the entire round played.

In Short
Unless you hear otherwise from your club, or read about it on the SSFA or your club’s website, you should expect to be playing. As always, contact your club if you have any questions.
Please note that SSFA and the club officials who make the call to the SSFA deeming the fields playable or otherwise are only in the game to see more football not less. If we had an opportunity to play more football – we would!

Regards
SSFA Executive Committee

WPL SSFA vs Bankstown. Sunday 1st July

Onward and Upward we go, we belong and we stay ………

WPL First Grade. SSFA 2 – Bankstown 1
Even with only 10 players for the majority of the game we remained the superior team by playing positive, creative football that proved the difference in the end.

WPL Reserves. SSFA 1 – Bankstown 1
We outplayed our opponent with very nice and entertaining football but were unlucky not to score ‘so so many’ goals. Another dominant performance by the girls.

WPL17. SSFA 2 – Bankstown 0.
Our ‘fill in’ coach said the right things and got the absolute best from the girls. A fantastic well deserved result

WPL14. SSFA 1 – Bankstown 0
I just wanted to start by saying we definitely set the standard for the whole day. We went into the game and gave it our all, we did not give up and kept our heads high. Some amazing strings and one two’s and a great penalty from Tara helped us win the game but mostly the enthusiasm and intensity that each and every one of us put in till the very last second. We all focused on our team tasks and completed all of them from what I saw. There were some tough calls from the refs but not one person argued, we played the whistle and I’m very proud of you all. I’d like to say congratulations to all the girls from sutho and the first grade girls who fought for everyone in the sutho community, who played and busted their butts to win today and to have an outcome of 4 wins out of 5 games and one draw is a great achievement. PL1 is where we belong. – Brodie Steel

WPL 15 SSFA 3 vs Bankstown 1
Before the game had begun we were determined to beat Bankstown as we wanted to achieve a better result than last time we played them. As the whistle blew we knew what our team tasks were and that we had to have the right mindset if we wanted to win this game.
After many opportunities getting forward and putting together combinations we managed to get a ball in the box that was fumbled by the bankstown keeper which Jade followed up and was able to put us ahead 1-0. After a positive first half we went into the change rooms and talked about what we are doing well and what we needed to work on.
As the whistle blew for second half Bankstown came out with a new mindset wanting to win tackles but we managed to keep them in our attacking half. After a great run by Mia she earned a penalty in the box, which Hoffy lined up to take and slotted the ball in the bottom right corner, setting us up with a 2-0 lead.
Bankstown where still determined to catch up and were lucky enough to receive a penalty just outside the 18 yard box that they managed to score from, we did not let our intensity or mindset drop because of this, we became more determined to get another goal. We won almost every 50/50 putting together many one twos, Mia gave a perfect first time pass to Paris which she placed into the top of the net. Overall we had an amazing game and a well deserved win. Thanks to all the 14s who played Lucy, Tilly, Tara, Jade and Brodie. Match report by Ashley Blayney

AYL U13 – SSFA (4) v Nepean (0) – Saturday 30 June

There is something about a game under lights at our regular training pitch that brings out the best in the boys. Nepean are bottom of the ladder and occasionally our team tend to struggle against the weaker sides, but tonight was an exception. Will scored within the first 5 minutes, followed closely by another goal a few minutes later. The instructions from the Coach were clear: Concentrate, knock the ball early and move into a space. Just before half time Luke C was able to put another into the back of the net and we were able to go into half time feeling positive. The boys needed to continue playing unselfishly if we were to tie up the win.
Second half, the boys had most of the possession and plenty of scoring opportunities. Obviously, the boys have been watching plenty of World Cup Football and in the 47th minute Jordan made an incredible break up the sideline and cut it back perfectly to Dylan who didn’t waste a scoring opportunity. Well done to our defenders also, this was now our 9th clean sheet for the Season.
Stefan was really pleased with the boys’ performance tonight. They are playing good football and continue to work and train hard. Cath B
