First Grade. Lost 3 – 2

Last round of the competition and todays game had a different feel about it. Neither team’s position on the table could change and we are due to meet each other next week in the semi’s.

With our captain being a late withdrawal due to sickness, there was a reshuffle in the backs and midfield. Both teams started well but Olympic got the early goal 12 minutes in from a corner. Our girls stuck to their game plan and we had a few attempts in the first half and were unlucky not go in 1-1 at half time.

Second half seen both teams play much the same way. We scored through a goal to Jordan in the 42nd minute but Sydney Olympic, not be denied, took the lead again in the 44th minute through a goal, once again, scored from a corner.

We weren’t finished with yet. Jordan scored a brace with another goal in the 50th minute to equalize at 2-2. A bit of feeling started to come into the game as both teams were wanting to go into next week with the advantage. Unfortunately for us, Olympic scored their 3rd in the 61st minute. We kept at them until the final whistle but their desperate defense denied us from scoring.

Thank you to Georgia James who made her first grade debut and Emma Garlick for filling in for us, you both did a great job.

Look forward to a great week at training and good luck girls in the semi final next week against Sydney Olympic. We would also like to wish the U/13’s, U/17’s and Reserve grade the best of luck for their semi’s and congratulate the U/15’s on a fantastic season.

WPL17 SSFA  v Sydney Olympic

Pre-game discussions amongst the girls ensured everyone was on the same page for today’s game – WIN and by lots to secure top spot on the table!

Sutherland kicked off and applied pressure immediately in their opponent’s half with plenty of play on the left side and middle of the field. The Sydney Olympic goalie was made to work hard saving an early shot from Tahlee and soon after both Bec and Emily firing more shots. There were many wasted opportunities in the box. Bridget charged into the box, with her shot just going wide of the left post. Sutherland were relentless in their pursuit of the elusive first goal, constantly attacking the box.

The midfielders were dominating possession. Emily then struck the ball cleanly, but once again it was saved by the goalie. After 23mins Sutherland finally found the back of the net. Zoe put a brilliant ball through to Leanna (an inspired substitution) who placed the ball beautifully past the goalie. 1-0 and the flood gates began to open. Minutes later Sutherland was back attacking the box and Leanna again chipped the ball to the side of the goalie for her second, 2-0.

After the kick off, Jasmine made a break up the middle of the field and passed to Brodie who crossed the ball nicely to Grace but she couldn’t quite get her head to the ball.

The second half saw Jayika hungry for the ball in attack making some good runs forward. Bridget ran onto a through ball in the box but was cut down from behind. She was consequently taken off and no longer able to participate in the game. A penalty was awarded, but unbelievably the Olympic player was not carded by the referee. The penalty was not converted.

Sutherland regained possession again and Jasmine pressed on the defence with Leanna quickly adding to her goal tally – a great hat-trick! 3-0 to Sutho!

Sophia had a shot which rebounded off the goalie and then slotted into the net by Bella. 4 – 0! Sutherland continued to maintain their intensity with the Sydney Olympic defence scrambling to protect their goal. Brodie took a great shot but it ricocheted numerous times until Georgia cracked it into the back of the net. 5-0 to Sutherland!

Well done Sutherland, a great game to secure their position as Minor Premiers. This week saw the girls displaying more determination, along with improved passing and communication to completely outplay the opposition in every department. Bring on Finals Football!

The successes keep coming for the SSFA WPL teams in 2017.

Along with the SSFA WPL winning the overall Club Championship for 2017 (giving us the opportunity to be promoted to the WPL1 Competition in 2018) the following results are worthy of the hard work and determination shown by the players and their coaches (and the supporters):

  • First Grade finished second in a very tough and physical competition.
  • Reserve Grade won the Minor Premiership outright in a convincing manner.
  • Under 17’s secured the Minor Premiership on the final weekend in a very tight competition settled, in the end, with a superior goal difference over the competition. The girls needed to complete the season with a strong finish which they did in emphatic style with a 5-0 win over Sydney Olympic.
  • Under 15’s came in sixth but only a few points behind a place in the final four.
  • Under 13’s finished second and more than ‘in the hunt’ to be competitive in the Championship series.

Great season girls!! Congratulations on a great, well deserved effort from all players, coaches & managers.

The club, coaching staff and parents are all extremely proud of what you have all achieved. Keep it going now into the Finals Series.

But the highlight was the sportsmanship displayed by everyone – coaches, managers players and supporters.

WPL17   SSFA 2-0 win vs Bankstown (Semi-final)

Wow, what a commanding performance. It’s still safe to say this was Sutherland at their absolute best. The final scoreline of 2-0 does not show the dominance but check some of these match statistics. Completed passes: Sutherland 178 vs Bankstown 68. Tackles: Sutherland 33 vs Bankstown 39. Total shots: Sutherland 15 vs Bankstown 4. Shots on goal: Sutherland 9 vs Bankstown 0. In the second half, Bankstown made just 23 completed passes and 22 tackles.

Here’s how the game panned out.

There was some work to do at both ends of the field early on. An early shot by Rebecca, a cross by Bella and then a super tackle by Emily when the team was caught short at the back. Jaz was heavily involved in the early stages, showing great strength on the ball. Bankstown were getting some space in the midfield. A cross that bobbled out of Matilda’s hands was only half cleared away but Sutherland escaped. Shortly after, Matilda came had to come boldly out of the box to clear a through ball. Bankstown’s strong period didn’t last long though, as Sutherland started to string some passes together. A series of passes downfield were starting to catch Bankstown short, with Rebecca and Leanna prominent. A key moment came from a long range free kick from Bankstown. As the ball curled towards the inside of the right post, there was Emily positioned as precisely as the free kick. Emily’s header off the line sent us straight into a counter attack and all of a sudden Bella was charging past the half way with only the goalie to beat. The crowd willed her shot in as it trickled past the goal following a desperate deflection from the goalie. Another lovely chain of passing involving Bridget, Bec and Georgia saw a shot from Georgia go wide. Bankstown were struggling to contain the speed and intensity of our attacking line, with Sophia, Bella and Leanna prominent. Then at 30 minutes, what a goal! The sweetest of strikes from 25 metres from Sydney’s most dangerous centre back, Emily, after a lovely one-two with Bec. Sutherland finished strongly showing speed and intensity, with Bridget’s strong physical play and Grace doing some good work in tight down the left side. Half time 1-0.

It was game on in the first minute of the second half with Grace passing to Bec, whose shot went wide. A key defensive header by Brodie defused a potential threat but then a cross from Bankstown found a player open on the 6 yard box, who seemed to stumble with the open goal beckoning. Somehow we survived. But that was it for Bankstown’s attack for the half. Jaz was having a cracking game in mid field, with a strong tackle on the edge of the box, followed shortly by a shot from an outstanding control and shoot from Bec, which was palmed away for a corner. A lovely cross from Emily on the right and Grace was just unable to connect in front of goal. Zoe chimed in with a long range crack from centre back. A shot from distance by Georgia after a cleared corner required a great save. Sutherland were in control. The dynamic Sophia passed to Jaz in the box but the close range shot was blocked by a desperate Bankstown. Leanna was providing great support at the back as well as defence, making an important header when under pressure from a weak clearance. The communication was loud and clear from the bench. Jayika calls as she runs into space down the right and Bec puts a beautifully weighted ball at her feet. Jayika’s cross was blocked but this was football at its best. Emily, Tahlee and Leanna showed their class as they threaded the ball down the left sideline from defence to attack. So much pressure from Sutherland, but still only 1-0. And then we cracked them on the 20 minute mark. Some good initial work from Jayika with a long ball across field to put us on the attack. Some tight work by Brodie, who got the ball to Georgia, who then slipped a gorgeous pass in behind the defence to a flying Leanna. Still high after her hat-trick last week, Leanna nailed it inside the near post. Oh yeah! But our girls weren’t resting on that. Sutherland steal the ball from the kick off and some great work by Christina saw us almost go up another goal. Sophia continued to set a cracking tempo up front, making a long sustained run in behind the defence. With no thought for her well-being, she went in hard to challenge the keeper outside the box but fortunately for Bankstown, the ball rebounded away. The last few minutes Sutherland showed their class and control at the back, with Zoe, Emily, Tahlee and Matilda moving the ball around the field, back then forward again, with Bankstown looking tired chasing all over the field but unable to get near the ball. Full time and a deserved 2-0 win. Outstanding players all over the park in a superb team performance. Grand Final. Bring it on.

WPL U13s. SSFA vs Marconi Won 3 – 2 (Semi Final)

WOOHOO… we are heading to the Grand Final, with a fantastic 3 – 2 win in nail biting extra time against the Marconi Stallions. We played some unbelievable football and in the end, it was an awesome game to watch. Within the first five minutes we had three shots on goal, with Tilly kicking a killer goal in the first three.  The energy we displayed showed our commitment to wanting to be in the grand final.  This was then followed by another amazing goal from Georgia putting us up 2 -1 in the first 15 minutes.   We played with intensity and we were fierce.   The second half came around with a score of 2 -1.  We couldn’t control the ball, as well as the first half and Marconi evened up the score, with a free kick and it was 2 -2.   We then went into extra time and this is when Megan scored an incredible goal to take us into the lead.  Abbey and Nicole did brilliant in controlling the defensive line. Whilst the midfield worked hard to make an opportunity for us to get the ball into the back of the net.  Forward’s did an outstanding job running up and down the line to cross over and shoot.  Overall we “defeated the undefeated”.

Well done to everyone, we deserved to win.  You girls played awesome and we are going to smash it in the Grand Final.

Blue, White, Go Sutho…

WPL17s Grand Final : Sutherland Shire FA v Bankstown City FC – Valentine’s Sports Park

Swirling winds, midday heat, goals, a penalty given, then changed to a free kick, injuries, stoppages, ambulances, extra time, wheelchairs, shootouts, high drama and finally – more than three hours later – a result.

Unfortunately not the one our girls had played so well all season to achieve with our opponents Bankstown edging it in the most cruel and unfair way to decide a game.

To summarise the football part, Sutherland opened the scoring in the 15th minute through a fine goal to Bec from an excellent pass from Leanna  off the back of a sustained opening period of possession and territorial dominance.

Bankstown equalised from a set piece 5 minutes before half time and that’s how it stayed until penalties where we went down 3-4.

As a spectacle the constant delays after half time did little to help the flow of the game but through it all the entire team showed class, maturity and, even after a defeat as disappointing as this, humility to congratulate the victors and give them their moment in the sun, literally.

What has been most impressive about the Under 17s this year is they are a genuine team. There are no weak links, nobody that has underperformed, let anyone down or been carried by others. Every single player has contributed to their team’s success.

Let’s start with our fine Keeper Matilda Woods and the magnificent defence of Zoe & Tahlee Zammit, Brodie Momsen, Jayika Thompson and Emily Thurgar who made every effort to play out from the back and keep the ball on the deck despite the ultimate risk of conceding a goal.

Our diverse midfield was highly entertaining with such technically gifted players as Jasmine Stretton, Grace Roddy, Rebecca Leech and Captain fantastic Georgia James pulling all the strings.

And then up front we had the likes of Isabella Fry, Bridget Fallah, Christina Dendrinos, Leanna Snuddon and Sophia Haralambis running the opposition ragged.

Not to forget the valuable assistance many of the Under 15s girls provided throughout the year when called upon.

The fact that eleven of our fourteen field players all scored a goal or more this season clearly illustrated how strong we were as a collective.

And all good friends off the field too which can never be underestimated as the secret ingredient to a side’s success on it.

A huge vote of thanks to our Coach Steve Brown & his assistant Nicole Besz who put so much time and effort week in week out to not only help the girls win games but also develop further and most importantly enjoy their football which I feel they all did.

Our team Manager Anna Zammit made by far the hardest and most thankless job in the club look so easy and simple. Thanks Anna.

Lastly thank you to all the parents who played their part in the background from free Uber services, barbecues, taking photographs, writing match reports, donning the fluoro vests to subdue overexcited Sutherland fathers/spectators and generally enjoy watching their daughters play such entertaining football.

It has been a very successful and memorable season. See you all next year.

What a wonderful feeling to finish the Season with a well-deserved win against Northern Suburbs.  The boys ‘lifted’ and gave a solid performance to jump Northern Suburbs on the ladder and finish 5th overall.  A special thank you to Sam Wild and Daniel Jordan from U15s for helping us out and securing the win.

It has been an absolute privilege to be involved with the boys this year.  A wonderful bunch of young gentleman who have demonstrated qualities of respect and good sportsmanship. They have worked hard throughout the Season and have hopefully enjoyed the journey.

A big thank you to Dragan for Coaching these boys.  Many espouse the theory ‘development is more important than winning’ but Dragan truly lives it.  He is a thorough gentleman and I know his caring and patient nature has had a positive impact on our boys.

Also, thank you to Stef for assisting Dragan – the apple doesn’t fall from the tree!  The boys all love and appreciate the time and effort you have put in.  You have been a fantastic role model for our boys.

Thank you to our amazing parents for your help this year.  Representative Football is a significant step for our boys and having supportive parents to assist with getting the boys to training and games is paramount to their success.  The encouragement and support you have shown the team throughout the Season has been greatly appreciated.

Sadly, this is the last Season for our boys at SSFA and hopefully they will continue to improve and develop their football whether it be at a Club level or otherwise.  Many friendships have been forged through a love and passion for the game and it was evident the boys wore the Sutherland Shire uniform with pride.  Team sports provide our boys with a natural community, working together, and trusting one another and hopefully the boys have realised the importance of this.

To Jon and Jeff, many thanks for your help and guidance throughout the Season. Cath Beardsley (Team Manager)

2017 Metro Far South – U15 Boys

This year the Far South Under 15 Team competed at Valentine Sports Park. This tournament was tough from start to finish. The history books will show that MFS U15’s finished 3rd in the 2017 tournament. What the books won’t show is the enthusiasm, the vitality and the exuberant vigour with which the players approached every game and with which their excited supporters celebrated.

Although we lost 2 and drew 1 of our first 3 games. Stefan and I were proud of the way the boys continued to battle and the way they handled themselves overcoming this setback. The team responded to this impediment with a much improved and sustained effort putting in hard work game after game. The team discovered that working together, holding your shape and passing produces results. Most importantly the team as a whole realised that without investing hard work we weren’t going to produce anything of value on game day. This eventuated in the boys winning their last 5 games scoring 17 goals and conceding NONE.

We had created enough chances to win all games but did not take them when presented. We probably deserved more from this tournament with the type of football played. Perhaps the most enjoyable part in the teams development was watching them maintaining possession of the ball. The boys used their short passing game to frustrate their opponents and at times their vocal crowd, resulting in oppositions scrambling for most of the game. We looked good when we pass and move, when we use wall passes and use screen runs through the opposition goal area. By the end of the tournament all players showed improvement in leadership, composure and confidence in their skills and each other.

Players played entertaining free flowing one touch football in a style that they had not had a chance to play at club level and they all enjoyed this freedom. The enjoyment showed in their football with great team shape, better ball movement and creative plays that pleased all who witnessed them.

As coaches of this team all we can say is that Stefan and I enjoyed every minute of football the boys played and that we are proud of every player. Well done boys you gave Stefan and me, your parents and the rest of the crowd at Valentine 100% all week and your football was great to watch. The boys are a credit to their families, Associations and current teams that they play for, good luck with your footballing futures and we hope to see you around the grounds.

The team took on the 2017 state titles tournament at Mudgee last week and showed great character in their performance through each game. In a week full of challenging opponents, 9 games of football and four seasons of weather the girls showed consistency in their spirit and passion for the game.

The natural talent and hard work showed by every player throughout the tournament produced the outcome of fantastic possession based football, which was exciting from start to finish for the parents, spectators and us coaches to watch. The execution of their core skills as well as the ability to maintain a positive brand of football under pressure, and the quality they showed playing within different positions made us coaches very proud. The girls held themselves extremely well and adapted to the many challenges and adversity that each game had to offer.

The teamwork displayed throughout the week was tribute to the bond they created both on and off the pitch, whether it be card games or football games there was always a high, positive energy within the group to create what overall was a fun week for everyone involved.
We are so proud of what the girls accomplished throughout the tournament and we look forward to seeing where football takes you in the future.

Congratulations on an exciting and successful tournament, girls.

Coaches: Raegan Deeley & Genevieve Nisbet.

This year, the U16 Girls City South Squad participated in the 2017 State Titles in Mudgee.

The quality of football played as each player adapted to different positions and challenges contributed to the positive outcomes and enjoyment of this prestigious tournament.

The tournament as expected was a challenge to all players against some very talented opposition. The players approached each game with confidence and considering the limited time spent together their teamwork and understanding was of a very high standard.

The character and composure this group of hardworking players showed when match conditions were difficult, was clearly evident by the effort put in by all players. It was also very pleasing to see the encouragement each team member showed to each other throughout the whole tournament.

The team produced some memorable performances with many highlights that we will always remember. A special thank you to our very vocal parent supporter base, which included a “Mexican Wave” – something that will be talked about for a long time.

The Football South Coast, Sutherland, Macarthur, Southern Districts and Bankstown Associations can be very proud of their development programs and football pathways, as these young women demonstrated by their achievements.

We wish all the players the very best as these talented, young women continue along their football pathways.

We would like to acknowledge and thank all players, parents, Convenors (John Whiddett and Jeff Stewart) and Manager (Kaitlyn Nicholson) for their support. It has been a pleasure to be part of such an enjoyable and successful experience.
